Since the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) entered into force, the strict principle of accountability (Article 5(2) GDPR) has applied in the European Economic Area: organisations must not only act in compliance with data protection law, but must be able to demonstrate this at any time, without gaps, to supervisory authorities and to data subjects.
In practice this often leads to chaotic island solutions: records of processing activities in outdated spreadsheets, uncoordinated data processing agreements and vague deletion concepts.
This is where the international standard ISO/IEC 27701 helps. As a certifiable extension of ISO 27001, it builds a bridge between technical information security and legal data protection. It establishes a comprehensive Privacy Information Management System (PIMS).
ISO 27701 is designed as an add-on to ISO 27001. That means: an existing information security management system, or one introduced at the same time, forms the foundation. ISO 27701 supplements this system with specific requirements for the protection of personal data (personally identifiable information – PII).
The standard distinguishes clearly between two roles:
For both roles the standard provides tailored control mechanisms, guidance and documentation standards.
The GDPR formulates legal principles – ISO 27701 translates them into practical management processes:
| GDPR principle / requirement | Implementation through ISO 27701 (PIMS) |
|---|---|
| Privacy by design and by default (Art. 25) | Fixed implementation of data protection impact assessments (DPIA) in the development and procurement cycle. |
| Rights of data subjects (Arts. 12–22) | Standardised processes and response times for access, rectification, data portability and erasure (“right to be forgotten”). |
| Processing by processors and the supplier chain (Art. 28) | Systematic review and auditing of sub-processors for data protection conformity. |
| Duty to notify personal data breaches (Arts. 33 and 34) | Established incident management processes for detecting, documenting and notifying within the 72-hour deadline. |
| Accountability (Art. 5(2)) | A complete audit trail through certified processes and regular independent checks. |
Why are more and more B2B organisations investing in ISO 27701 certification?
Certification to ISO 27701 always takes place in conjunction with ISO 27001:
Data protection is not a tiresome exercise for lawyers, but a central trust factor in B2B business. With ISO 27701 you transform legal uncertainty into a robust, certified management system.
